Advice to struggling social media newbies
In addition to writing this blog, I regularly contribute to the wonderful limebirds, which was set up by limebirdbeth and brings together a range of contributors from diverse writing backgrounds.
In my first post on the site I wrote about how daunting it can be to make inroads into the world of social media as a writer. It prompted a lot of really useful feedback in the comments section from other people either still in exactly the same position, or who could remember being there and I thought it might be useful to bring it all together in a fresh post.
So here are top tips from a range of newbies past and present:
- First and most importantly, you are not alone. Friendship, whether in the 'real' or 'virtual' world is a reciprocal relationshipand someone in a similar position is going to be just as grateful to make a connection with you as you are to make one with them.
- Be aware ofwho you're writing forand what you want to say.Find people like you on twitter or blogs and start networking.

- Keep at it. Accept that it takes time and effort to build your online profile and don't feel disheartened when you compare your own site statistics to more established sites. Think about what you're trying to achieve – e.g. a fast-track to multiple followers? Slow and steady growth? A particular niche audience? – and focus on that.
- You need to get out there, visit other blogs and network. Just hitting 'like' or making a general comment (e.g. 'I agree') might get you reciprocal traffic (i.e. a fast-track into multiple followers), but you need to be prepared to put more effort in if you want to create meaningful relationships (i.e. slow and steady growth).
(The reason limebirds is so successful is because limebirdbeth gets out there and makes connections with a large number of blog writers andalways follows upin a genuine and meaningful way, which is no mean feat when you consider she also has a full-time job!)

- Don't forget that behind every blog or twitter name there is a real person with thoughts and feelings – the same 'rules' of courtesy apply online as to speaking to someone in person – to create meaningful relationships respond if someone makes a comment on one of your blog posts; acknowledge and thank new twitter followers. It's easy to forget that random new follower - @xyzblah-de-blah is a real person!
- That said, don't take it to heart if sometimes other people forget that (more often than not it's completelyinadvertenton their part) – there are enough things to get you down in life without worrying about it if someone doesn't follow you/ unfollows you on twitter; or doesn't respond to a comment you've made on their blog; or doesn't pass on that blog award to you – things like this can hurt when you're already feeling vulnerable, but try to keep it in perspective!
- Set realistic goals for yourself e.g. one tweet a day / one blog post a week – people following you are more likely to be engaged if they know what to expect rather than have a flurry of posts one day and then nothing for months.
- Remember that people can't always get the tone of a comment when it's written in black and white, particularly if they haven't met you in person to know when you're being , for example, sarcastic or flippant.Think about how what you say could be misinterpreted.
- "Be yourself, be polite and be consistent." (jmmcdowell)
- "Do what you enjoy most and focus your efforts there. Be open to other forms of social media, dip a toe in and try them, but dont force yourself to continue something if it makes you miserable or fills you with dread." (Kourtney Heintz)
- "Jump right in, learn all you can, and share what you learn." (Darla McDavid)
- There are tricks of the trade – familiarise yourself with the vehicles for increasing blog traffic. For example, Limebirdbeth recently wrote a couple of great posts on Search Engine Optimisation and networking &using tags or categories
- And most of all have fun!
